Hi Mark

Dancing With Dolores arrived Saturday and I immediately played it through, not once but twice, and it really showcases the talents of the band.  The production is superb!

I really like the sound you've managed to capture in the studio - more so than Blue Funk.  I played it on a Rega Planet CD player, through an Audio Analogue Bellini/Donnizetti pre-power amp combo in to a pair of Ruark Prologue floorstanders.  I'm basically a vinyl man (got a 1955 Garrad 301 turntable with Origin Live arm) and the Rega comes close for a CD player.

Dancing With Dolores rocks!  Thanks for the music, Mark.

J.B.

Fireworks of rythms. A real pleasure

The trio from Lancashire is back and it's great! Fireworks of rhythms...blues, soul, funk. With this CD, Giles assert their place among the best british bands of the decade. First rank musicians, very good production, quality is here. Four covers with a special touch of their own: Freedom by Richie Havens, Gypsy Eyes by Jimi Hendrix, Nutbush City Limits by Tina Turner, Bird On The Wire by Leonard Cohen. As for the original material, one day the songs by Mark Koehorst will become classics. A real pleasure. Gilles Blampain

The Real Sound

“What a record! Blues, funk, soul, the real sound! A great CD by one of the best british bands of the decade. 10 original songs by Mark Koehorst and 4 covers, Freedom by Richie Havens, Gypsy Eyes by Jimi Hendrix, Nutbush City Limits by Tina Turner, Bird On The Wire by Leonard Cohen, all with a great feeling and the Giles’ touch. Beware of the spell: if you listen to Dancing With Dolores, you’ll wish to do it again and again. Great musicians, good production, high quality. It’s a must! Gilles Blampain”

“Hi Mark

Thank you very much for the cd enjoyed it very much !

letter to bush, dancing with dolores, bird on the wire &

the last track ( sorry cant remember the title ! ) the highlights for me

thought you caught the fragility of bird on the wire.

always brave to do a Cohen track not many dare !

see you at Colne

cheers, John & Kath”

“Hey Mark,

How are you? Just wanted to let you know that I received your new CD and I played Wanna Come Home Father [in my radio show]. I just love this track, every time I hear the song it makes me want to cry, it has, I think such emotion attached to it. It's simply brilliant. Anyway it's on-line now and should get around 3k downloads while it's available and I'll play another one of the album on the next one. Take it easy.

Regards

Brendan”  [The Blues Connection]

“Hi Mark

got the new album yesterday, many thanks.

What can I say ....its absolutely fantastic, I thought it was going to be tough to better the last one but this is light years in front. I would think the reviews are going to be out of this world.

Pass my sincere congratulations on to the lads.

The whole piece has a depth to it I wasn’t expecting, even the CD cover, (where can I get a copy of the art work?).

Keep up the good work and many thanks again

Best regards to you and yours

C. N.

“Hi Mark

CD received yesterday, thanks.  Only had time for a quick listen so far, but
sounds great!

Thanks, Pauline”

“Hey Mark,

Finally got a spare moment to listen to the disc. VERY cool vibe to it. I played it at work and a few other people actually asked me what was playing and said it was really good.  Not to try and classify it but it had a kinda loose jammy kinda flow very much like Widespread Panic and Phish.  Keep up the good work and let me know what you need.
Woody” (US promoter)

“Thanks for the pictures, it was (again) a special experience for me:
enjoyable and enriching. I could not talk too much with you, I would have
been interesting investigating the roots that make your sons so special.

I have heard several times your new song [Dancing with Dolores]. At first, it sounds a little
strange for me (used to Spanish sounds). I like it. I let my best friend
hear the song, these are her comments (I try to translate):

me transporta como a un desierto, con un bar en medio, de madera y estar
escuchando la canción con los pies descalzos sobre la arena. mucho sol y
mucho calor
(the song takes me to a dessert or so, with a wooden bar in the middle, with
my feet on the sand, it's sunny, very hot)

bueno el final, es diferente con las sirenas y eso, no es tan trankilo
(well, the end is different with the sirens is not so quiet)

me gusta incluso para follar. tienes mas?
(I even like it as backgrund music while making love. do you have more?)

I agree with her. is a good song.

I hope I can see you all again. good luck in your gigs!”
– Marta

“Hi Mark

My only regret about the evening in Harrogate is that we did not get to the Blues Bar until you were doing the last song in the first set ! It was a great evening.

I’m just learning guitar and you are an inspiration.  The band is very tight as well.

I remember buying Stevie Wonder’s Superstition when it first came out as a single.  Being more of a T-Rex kid than Mowtown it had to be very special for me to buy it.  It was great to hear your version and it sounded superb.

Thanks again and good luck with the rest of the tour.

Best Wishes

David”

“ i enjoyed a lot!! so i told some people in barrow you will have a
concert there next friday. i only need to know the name of the place and
what time. i think they will like your music, i was impressed.

thank you!
Marta”

[following our appearance at the Rock and Blues weekend in Skegness, Jan 06:]

The Band’s two sets at Skegness recently showed how far the Band have progressed in the last two years, to open a festival on its first night is an awesome task, but one that you guys rose to with no problem in front of 2,500 people. The first set got them talking, the second set got them wanting more and you gave it to them !!  It was a blinder, heard people talking about the Band all weekend. They had seen and heard the  GILES Experience and it truly was one !!

Well done guys ”    M.Y.

Mark,
Hi my friend Brigid said I had to get in touch and
tell you the band were AWESOME at Skegness.”
– Christine M.

“Just a note to say it was fab to meet you and how much I enjoyed your show at mighty Skegness.” – Sue Marchant of BBC Radio Sussex

You were probably my favourite act – I'm a guitarist too, and I could hear your touch. Surprises me how few have that.

I was speaking to a BBC DJ, Susan Marchant, who was also extolling your virtues.

Just off to Jamaica for a concert – back after 8 Feb.– M.R.

I went to the website & listened to some sample's of your music....I really love it!!!!!!!!” – Vicky C.

Hi Mark!,

Thanx for letting me know about your next gig in dear old Hartlepool.

Me & my friends will be there along with quite a few more - i hope.

We all REALLY enjoyed your set at The Causeway-you are all really exceptional - its gotta be said.  It was definitely one of the BEST nites i've had in there for ages. Giles has got a new fan-base going on, anyway!!! - its a pity there were not more people there but i'm sure there’ll be plenty more gigs to come!! - so i'll see you soon!

Bye for now.

Kathy”

“I really  enjoyed your music and we had a great night.” – M.L.

“Hi

Thanks for contact.  Enjoyed your gig at the Causeway earlier this week.   Very, very impressive ….  Keep it going. Hope to see you soon.  I see you are playing the Aintnothinbut bar later this month.  I always go there when I’m in London…..live music 7 nights a week…marvellous!

Cheers

Gordon”

“Really enjoyed the gig yesterday especially Gets me nowhere, thanks for that.  Everyone else seemed to enjoy it too & you looked like you sold lots of CD's, hopefully you'll be back next year maybe when your new Cd's out.” – J.D.

“hi boys, just wanted to say that i really enjoyed your music.....saw at at the flying horse in blyth, love gina x

– Frederic of Shotgun Blues at Radio Vesoul

“…I wanted to add that I'm so glad I have seen Giles in concert because even
if people is not very interested by blues rock (as I was), you have created
such a good mood, and three of you are so good musicians who really "live"
their music, so I changed my opinion about music style that I didn't
appreciate before and now I know that good bands can make you change your
opinion and my friend Fred is so happy  about that!!
– Muriel

“Hello Mark,
It was great to meet you to and to discover blues with such a good band,

Have a great day , and say hello from me to Piet” –
Muriel in France

Hello,

I saw your concert at "the marais" in france...  I passed a very good evening with you, and I was transported by your music, I love it!

And I hope to re-see (?) in France

I hope a long life for Giles!!!!! Vivie the music!” – Marielle C.

“Hi Mark
Nice of you to e-mail, the second CD is excellent, I think I may have
destroyed my car speakers by playing it too loud on the way home Saturdaynight.

The Gig was excellent, shame there weren't more people there.” – C.N.

Hi Mark,
I found you through the album Blue Funk which appeared as a donation in a charity shop run by my lady! I always keep my eyes open, when I am helping out there, for unusual CDs which might appeal to my ears and was both pleased and surprised by this one. It was a great find for the investment of £1.50 but has now cost me more as I have just ordered your previous two albums through Amazon - so that has put the cost up a bit!

As a further comment, I have recommended Blue Funk to both Paul Jones and to Bob Harris through the BBC website as I felt that your music fitted both of their well respected programmes. I am sure that they must get a lot of recommendations and freebie albums pushed on them but I was frankly amazed that you have not yet been played (as far as I can see) by either of them - you certainly deserve to be.

I wish you very well and look forward to catching up with you live one
day soon,

P.C.”

“Please add me to the mailing list - I have just found you and your music and it is EXCELLENT” – P.C.

“Hi Mark

We had a great time at Colne and loved your set.  Pity it wasn't longer!  I hope the filming went well.  I've attached some pics - hope you like them.

Take care

Janet”

Hi Mark,

We last saw you playing in Wrexham, my son Andy and I came up from Walsall for the gig which we really enjoyed. […] Mentioned I come originally from S. Wales, born near Pontypool, so am combining visit to see mother with seeing you in Ponty. Really looking forward to seeing the band play and hopefully it will all work out well and we will get there. My wife may well be with me this time, Andy cannot make it.

Good luck with the band and all you are doing, really like your music and all the best to you and the rest of the lads. See you in Pontypool. Hopefully.

Regards B.P.

ps may well have camera with me - ok if I do a few shots and let you have copies?”

“We love the music..................Here in the
USA...........................Thanx  Kathleen”

“Hi Mark
Just a quick note to say have a great gig at Colne and congrats on the Blues Review piece! Catch up in glasgow in October!

Best
Mel

“Hello guys,

Can you please keep me up to date with wha'ts happening with the band. I play bass with Lazy Poker and Mel, our drummer, let me hear Blue Funk after seeing one of your shows, I have to say I thought the album was outstanding and I can't wait to see you guys live. Funk edged Blues does it for me everytime, please keep up the excellent work.

Regards,

Grant”

“Hi Mark,

It was great to see you in Wrexham recently, we both really enjoyed the gig. I enjoyed the fact that you were the only band playing, so that we got a longer set, with more variety. Having now listened to the first cd I can see why you said you are playing a lot from it recently, its good!

Have looked on your website and checked out some of your gigs so hope to see you again some time, I was born in Pontypool and my mother is still alive so that as you are playing the festival there that could be an opportunity to see Mum and the band!

Anyway to conclude, we both really enjoyed both gigs we have seen you play, and look forward to seeing you again at some time. Whenever I see somebody like yourself, and band, with all that talent, I think its a shame that there are not more people watching. Still, that makes it cheaper for the likes of me, and easier to get to the front.

Regards to you and the band.

Bob”

“Hi Mark,

My son Andy and I saw you at Ripley  when you supported Ian Parker, Andy spoke to you afterwards and we bought two of the cds. Although we drove all the way up from Walsall to see Ian Parker, and I had never heard of Giles before, we both thought the band were superb. So now that the Scottish tour is over and you are playing at Wrexham, that is within range! We look forward to seeing you again, its just a shame for us that most of your gigs are a good distance from Walsall.Must ring the Talbot Bar for details and look on the map for directions.Regards, B. P.”

Hi

I listened to your music on numberone site (im from estonia by the way), and i think its really cool! But I havent heard of you before. I think lot of people would listen to that kind of music and those songs. So just advertise yourself more, and come to Estonia and give a concert here too, your music is awesome.

Aidyn”

“Hello,

Please keep me updated on your future activities.

The following was sent in by fellow musician Mel Ross of the Scottish blues trio Lazy Poker:

Subject: Priceless

Martin wakes up at home with a huge hangover. He forces himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he sees is a couple of aspirins and a glass of water on the side table. He sits down and sees his clothing in front of him, all clean and pressed. Martin looks around the room and sees that it is in perfect order, spotless, clean. So is the rest of the house.

He takes the aspirins and notices a note on the table. "Honey, breakfast is on the stove, I left early to go shopping. Love You!"

So he goes to the kitchen and sure enough there is a hot breakfast and the morning newspaper. His son is also at the table, eating. Martin asks, "Son, what happened last night?" His son says, "Well, you came home around 3 AM, drunk and delirious. Broke some furniture, puked in the hallway, and gave yourself a black eye when you stumbled into the door."

Confused, Martin asks, "So, why is everything in order and so clean, and breakfast is on the table waiting for me?" His son replies, "Oh, that! Mum dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take your pants off, you said, "Get your hands off me, bitch! I'm married!"

Moral of the Story.
Self-induced hangover -- $100.00
Broken furniture -- $2,000.00
Breakfast -- $10.00
Saying The Right Thing to your wife when you are Drunk -- PRICELESS!”
Thanks Mel!

“Hey! I loved each one of your songs but the one song that really hit me was the first song on your list I had one of those feelings that this one would be perfect in video. I do hope to see you when in Germany and you can bet I'll be the first in line for tickets.

“What's Up Mark!

I got your CD this weekend! Congratulations on such a fine job! Your band Giles deserve lots of major label recognition! Great work!

I love hearing the tracks, "The Chase", "So Much Pain" , "Clyde" over and over.Your branded style of music is very creative. Your mixture of smooth funk/ r&b withsome rough-edged electric blues has a great balance and pleasing to the ears. When I hear you guys, some of the artists that comes to my mind are Santana andRobert Cray, especially when I hear "The Chase" and "Clyde". Are you sure you'rejust an indie group? (smile)

I can tell this project was a labour of love. You guys must have worked very hard with this.Very well experienced and polished performance. You guys should be commended! In a way, I feel like I bought the CD at a record store. Very professional work, indeed!

As you know, my station FUNKY BROADWAY RADIO is a classic soul/ oldies/ funk format. However, I was condsidering a show for R&B indie artist as well. I've been so great fully overwhelmed by artists who want to hear their music on my little station. I'm very thankful for this. I hope I'll have my indie show ready in  a couple of weeks. Your group is definitely on the lists.

I have a spot for you on my "Sunday Smooth Grooves" show this Sunday. I play smooth R&B from artists yesterday and today. The two hour show starts at 8 p.m. (EST) 5 p.m. (PST). Hope that's not too late for you, being in Europe and all. (smile) I cannot be too specific on what time the song will be played due to my network's policies, but I promise

I'll play one of your tracks on this show. You went out of your way to give me this CD, and I appreciate this a whole lot.

Once again, thank you for the CD. I'll keep you in touch about my indie show. See ya!

“Just wanted to say really enjoyed the gig on Saturday night shame it wasn't a little longer.  Have just checked your gig list to see if you are anywhere in my area soon unfortunately it doesn't look like it,  Any plans to visit the Lincolnshire/Humberside area in the near future? I also tried to subscribe to your mailing list but nothing appeared to happen, Can you add my e-mail address.

Thanks

Jo”

“Mark,

I've just played Blue Funk to a good friend of mine and he was blown away, he also picked up on the hint of Steely Dan. He like me said he's got to come see you live.” Dave D.

“Hello Mark,
I am listening to "blue funk" and it is really good. The arrangements
are super cool, instrumentation really funky, and the vocals are quite
nice and vibey. Did you say Piet was your son? Do I hear my beloved
Wurlitzer on there too?
Anyway, I could not remember if I had written to you or not but I
really dig this album. Congratulations!
I hope this e-mail finds you all healthy and happy.
I am glad to say that I mix my last song this weekend. ( I went in and
did some re-mixing) and so I will send you a copy when the album is
printed up- can you send me your address? I am hoping to get on the
road this summer....maybe we can do some shows together?
Thanks for sending your new music and I hope you like mine as well. “-
Michelle White (daughter of Tony Joe)

“Good grief, Mark, your CD is one of the best I have ever been sent by an individual rather than a record company.”  – Paul Gambaccini (Jazz FM)

“My friend Nick loaned me your new CD and I must
say I love it and it has turned Nick and my Husband
around to your music, so all I can say is I was right
in the first place you are a talent to be watched.
GREAT album.

Cheers
Christine”

“Mark,

Oprechte groeten,

Eric

we doen nog wel iets samen”

“Hi Mark

I saw you performing with your son at the Orkney blues fest, and it blew me away. When are you coming down to London, or am I going have to travel up North. Either way good luck tomorrow night.

Neil”

“Thank you for the new cd. It smokes from first track to
the last and i will be playing bunches from it in
upcoming shows. You guys just get better every time
out. You deserve to be heard and you can count on Blues
Flight to do that, i will spread the word in my part of
the world. Thank you again Mark” –
Mark Smith (KJLU Radio)

“Totally digging the album! Great effort, as strong as the previous. I'll be spinning more as time goes by.
Do you get to hear the live or archived shows at all?” –
Dan Herman (Radio Crystal Blue)

“I love the energy you are taking to promote the group.  It is the only way
to succeed in this era. “ -
Paul Gambaccini (Jazz FM)

“Hi Mark,

I finally got to check out your soundbites, and the new CD sounds
great! Funky and soulful as heck. My faves are the JJ Cale tune and
the Rage-ish tune. Are you playing a lot of the instruments or is it
your band? The songs sound like they have more cohesiveness between
them than the previous recordings, but still retain that wonderful
eclectic playfulness. (and you can quote me on that!)

Peace

Mitzi

“Dag Mark,

nieuwe nummers  klinken heel goed !!

Groet,

Eric”

“I have listened to the CD [blue funk] and it’s absolutely blown me away. I think it’s fantastic. I was going to ask you if you’d send me the other two. I’ve not heard anything quite so fresh for quite a while, so I am very impressed. Thanks very much.”

“Dear Mark,

If ‘Blue Funk’ is as good as the other two I’ve got then it will be great! They sit comfortably in my C.D. collection next to Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Rory Gallagher etc.

The newsletter is a pleasure to receive also – much better than bills or solicitors letters!!

      Many thanks”

I have just been downloading and listening to the cuts of your new CD [Blue Funk].  have you been using a new person to do the mixing??  The recording quality is about 1000 percent better.  It is so clear and sharp.   I want one of the first copies so that I can do a review for BLUESMATTERS Magazine.  (As well as being one of the first DJ's to be able to air this exellent piece of work.)

 “Hi Mark

Mark,
Re: the CDs.

Ha! After saying earlier I wouldn’t buy the CDs, you must have all been thinking ”Ho, ho, wait and see what he says once he’s heard them” J I could write pages about the ‘Coming Home’ CD alone, but your head would swell so much it would pop. And ‘Blood From A Stone’ kicks off with the incredible ‘She Broke My Heart’. Thank you!

‘Lost A Friend’is amazing. Keep ’em coming.

Congratulations on your new promotions deal. I‘ll be watching the gig list and looking forward to seeing the band again sometime.

“Hi Mark

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your set at Colne. I've been meaning to put fingers to keys but you know how it is!  I love the new web site - much easier on the eye.

It looks like things are going really well for you, lots of dates - I was hoping to get to the Orkney festival but a slight cash flow problem stopped that!

I've attached some pics from Colne - feel free to use them if you think they're ok.

Looking forward to seeing you again - soon I hope!

Regards

Janet”

(about Clyde, the first song for the new album)

“Waka-chika-waka-chika! Crazy!

Absolutely love it. Is this with Piet and Terry who were so good last night at the Farnham Maltings?

I arrived in Farnham for a meeting at 7.30pm and had a few minutes to kill, so looked around the Maltings for a while. Heard you warming up and came back after the meeting. Enjoyed it so much I stayed all evening. Thanks, guys! It's so hard to find your style of music being played these days, Mark. You've got a great voice and your guitar style is my favourite. Fantastically supported by Terry's drums and your son's bass.

I won't buy the first 2 cd's as I think you can't beat it live, but if the third is all as good as this I can't wait to get my hands on a copy. When's it coming out?

Best Regards

Rob, Kingston-upon-Thames”

“Good gig.

Enjoyed listening to the Cds.

See you on 18 December - the Blues Band.

“Mark,
Just a quick note about the Coaching House gig, two superb sets last night, I was stunned, I have watched bands around Lancashire for the last thirty ! years, but what you have put together here is something else,  brilliant songs and guitar playing by yourself, very powerful and tight drumming from Terry, and Piet on bass what can I say, he looked so at ease with what he was doing, a great talent that can only go from strength to strength along with the band.

After I drove home played both CDs until 2.00am then had to get up for work at 6.00am I was that impressed !!

Looking forward to the Blackpool gig (might blow the Feelgoods away) and the 12 Bar

Keep up the excellent work this band is destined for greater things
Regards
Mark”

“Hi Mark, Just a quick note to say a big thank you for helping to contribute to what was an immense night on Friday. It was quite an emotional night for me to have the last gig(probable) at the rugby club and as you probably could tell I was a little worse for wear at the end and I think I forgot to thank you and the boys and also to wish you and your wife a happy Christmas and a great new year.

The jam at the end was really one of the finest moments in all the gigs we have put on over the six years and I am thrilled to say that it was recorded so if you want a copy let me know. Sam Kelly who is one of the most experienced of Brit musicians was awed by it and agreed with me. It was recorded by microphone and not through the deck but still sounds ok capturing the excitement.

Once again, a big thank you and I look forward to catching up with you in the new year.

Regards, Pete”

“Please hurry and send cds as soon as possible.Saw GILES at Blackpool, where backup to DR FEELGOOD.EXCELLENT entertainment from both bands.”  - Spidy

“Thanks, Mark!
Hey, I finally found some time to write "Blood" a little review. Hope
you like it. I listened to the CD while i was writing it and got very
inspired. You got some serious soul, bro –!”

Hi Mark,

“Just a quick note to say thanks for the fantastic gig on Friday, and what a sound from your guitar!  I'm sorry the crowd wasn't big, but I think its fair to say that those there really appreciated your music.  It was also really appreciated that you played as if the place was packed!  I was particularly impressed by your reworkings of old classics - and the CD hasn't been out of the player in the car (and I have to drive a lot!).  I think the word will spread so there should be a much bigger crowd next time you play Hookers!”   -   A.D.

“Dear Mark, you are definitely re-inventing the blues.
I Loved the CD some real class on there : Stop Breaking Down, Hipshake (dont understand why this was not in your set list) Move, Take it slow and Rollin & tumblin' but the 2 tracks that leaped out at me where Rain and Gets me nowhere. 'Rain' was even better live; you and Bobby's harmonies were great. Id love to hear you redo the cd version with a slightly quicker tempo it would be a killer track. 'Gets me nowhere' is also a cleverly written track, again great harmonies on this track and a great catchy chorus.

I think any band that covers lesser known material, and makes them their own like you do, is a far better idea than going out purely as a covers band.
Yes you've converted me.

I really wish your band well and hope you go from strength to strength. Kind regards,   Bill”

“Hoi Mark.

Harstikke bedankt voor je CD................................

Klinkt puik en origineel!! Pr materiaal ziet er goed uit.

Persoonlijk sterke voorkeur voor de uitvoering rollin´& tumblin´. Heerlijke feel zit daar in.

Succes met je optredens en hopelijk komen we elkaar eens tegen op de bluespodia!” - Chris Janssen

“Cheers for the update mate. looking forward to your next gig here at the ship”   -   B.D.

“Hi Mark

I saw your set at Colne and very much enjoyed it.”  -  L.R.

“The Giles promo CD (a quality sound bite!) contains refreshingly original material together with re-workings done Giles style. However, this doesn’t prepare you for Giles in the live situation – a band of awesome capabilities!” – Rod Tibbols of the Fleetwood Blues Club

“Mark,

Thanks for the email and certainly you can add me to the emailing list.  I have been listening to the CD and I am very impressed.  Mixing the old blues with a new style works well.  Have a good new year and hopefully will see you playing out in San Francisco soon.

Take it easy...Cody”
